PROPOSED IMPORT DUTIES.
FREE TRADERS AGITATED,
LONDON, July 24, There is a tremendous flutter amongst Free Traders in consequence ■of Mr Asquith's implied assent to the imposition of import duties in order to lesson the consumption of oversea goods. The "diehards" propose to strenuously oppose this, but it is believed the great majority of the members of the House of Commons realise that it is imperative, in view of the necessities of the situation. Imperial Protectionists are confident • that a death-blow will be dealt to Free Trade.
