HAMPSTEAD TOWN BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Hampstead Town Board was held last evening Present- Commissioners W. Tlfompson chairman), W J. Cunningham, W. H. Robinson, G. W. Andrews, and P. Baker. . , An apology for absence was received from Commissioner \Vilson. The chairman, reported a credit balance at the Bank amounting to £IUO A letter was received from the Valuation Department, Christchurch, stating that if the Board would have a list of new "buildings'prepared, to be added- to the roll, the District Valuer would be instructed to call when those ihad been added, if the roll was forwarded it would be brought up to date. —The'letter was referred to. the Clerk to attend to. _ „ Mr, R; G. Bright, the Board's contractor, wrote givinrc two months' notice of the termination of the agreement made in May 1913, between him and the Board.— Accepted, on the motion of Commissioners Andrews and Baker.

A circular letter was received from the New Zealand Municipal Association asking for remits, for the Biennial Conference, to 4>e held in.July.'next, to be forwarded 1 as soon as possible.—The letter was received, and on the motion of Commissioners Andrews and Cunningham, the following, remits were ordered to be sent forward: —(1) "That Town Boards be empowered to appoint their own valuators, similar to Borough Councils"; (2) "That three days be full and sufficient notice to call any meeting of the Board." The Inspector reported that certain ratepayers had been served with notices to cut-fences and others to clean water races. Cattle had been found straying on the roads. There was a satisfactory state of cleanliness throughout the district.—The report was 'considered satisfactory and adopted.

Public notice, per the medium of advertisement, having been given, the following special order was confirmed and adopted, on the motion of Commissioners Cunningham and Lldyd: — "That no person shall drive or cause to be driven any motor, or vehicle over, along, or across, any street within the Town District of Hampstead, at any time of the day or night, at a greater pace than 12 miles per hour."

In connection with the cancellation of the Board's present scavenging contract, by the resignation of the Board's contractor, Commissioner Baker' moved that the Board call for separate tenders for day work and scavenging work, or combined .—Commissioner Andrews I seconded the motion, and suggested that the Board might call for;tenders for night soil collection at per pan, and a separate tender for day work. — Commissioner. Cunningham said he was not in favour of separating the work. He did not think;the Board could improve on the' present ''system,' if the day work and the night work was kept to certain days.-Commissioner Robinson spoke in favour of calling for separate tenders. The Board would be able to see what the two systems were likely to cost, in comparison to the combined work. The Board had the I option of refusing any tender. He j thought the present system could not be bettered to any great extent.— Commissioner' Lloyd ventured the opinion that more had been done to the roads and footpaths in the. last 12 months than had been done in the previous five years. He did not like the idea of separating the day work from the night work.-—Commissioner Andrews considered that the Board would' be fully justified in calling for separate tenders,—The motion—that separate tenders be called for day work and scavenging work, or combined, to be in by May SO^—was carried.—Commissioners Robinson and Andrews were appointed a committee to draw up a : schedule of duties for the day man and the scavenger. The Works'. Committee's report regarding general maintenance work was considered satisfactory, and adopted. The Clerk, was instructed to apply to the Government and to the Municipal Association's solicitor for information regarding the taking of a property in Wellington Street, under the Public Works Act, for road-widening purposes.

Accounts amounting to £82 3s 5d were passed for payment.
