CO-OPERATIVE WORKERS.
A DIMINISHING QUANTITY.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, February 21. Public Works activity has evidently dropped to a low ebb, judging by the latest official figures, which gave details of the men employed by the Public Works Department on roads, railways and other public works during December, the total being nearly 2000 smaller than it was during December two years ago, prior to the advent of the Reform Ministry. It may be taken for granted that the figures for last monu will, when published, show a further diminution as many men leave about Christmas and do not return immediately to the State employ.
The details" of the last few years are instructive:—
Dec. 1911 1912 1913 Railways. ... 3,328 ... 1,990 ... 1,937 Roads. 3,005 2,563 2,477 Total. 6,333 4,553 4,414
