LAURISTON.
School Picnic. The annual picnic m connection with the Lauriston School was held m one of Mr W. T. Lowe's paddocks at "Oakwood" on Thursday afternoon, and al- • though the weather was decidedly i damp there was a good xnuster of children, parents and friends present. ' J Diiring the afternoon a number of i ! children's races were held, and also one or two events for adults. VroLbably the event of the day was a> I pony trot, the riders being school boys and'girls:" The boy who rode xhe winning mount, had a lead of about a quarter of a! mile, when his horse suddenly took it into his head that the lead was too' great and despite the efforts of his youthful jockey he turned round m a most deliberate manner and went back to meet the rest of the 'field-in the..race and then won easily amidst cheers from the spectators. Prizes were presented m tho evening by Mr W. J. Dickie, M.P. for Selwyn, who, m a neat little speech, referred to the time when he was a schoolboy at Lauriston School.
