GATHERING OF HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS.
fho pupils of the Ashburton High School (over 120 strong) held a reunion social m the school Assembly Hull last evening, when, the attendance of old scholars having been specially invited, the gathering exceeded 150. The Headmaster (Air W. I<'. Waiters, 8.A.) presided, and was supported by his staff—Mi- E. T. Norris, if.A., Miss F. E. Kershaw, M.A.. and Miss XL Stevens, 13.Sc. ; while amongst those present was the' chairman of the Board of Governors (Mr J. Tucker). The proceedings were opened with tho singing of the School Song by the present pupils, after which, the chairman explained the object of the gathering, the first of its kind to be held, but which, it was hoped, would be an annual affair. The immediate cause of the meeting was the wish of the boys and girls of the school to say good-bye to those of their number who were finally leaving the school ; while it was also hoped that, by inviting ex-pupiis, something definite might be done m regard to the formation of an Expupils' Association. Mr Watters spoke m very kindly terms of those who were leaving, and of what they had done to promote the welfare of the school and its allied institutions. Masters P. S. Crisp and H. G. Bell, on behalf of the pupils who intended resuming work at the school after the Christmas vacation, expressed the regrot felt at the severance of the school ties with their fellows who were leaving that day; and Masters R'auru Jones and E. H. Bastion briefly replied, thanking their comrades for their words of parting, and expressing their appreciation of the work of their'teachers. During the evening music and games were played, the following contributing to the programme : Song, Miss B. Loy; j violin solo, Miss E. Claridge; pipe solo, Mr McGhilp. The accompaiments were played by Misses Kershaw and Claridge and Master P. S. Crisp. The gathering, which was a very successful one, broke up shortly before midnight, with the singing of "Anld Lang Syne."
