SUNDAY SHOOTING.
A correspondent who lives m one of the upper districts writes stating that 1 the residents m the locality complain bitterly m regard to the practice of I young men from Ashburton shooting I over their properties on Sundays. This objectionable practice has been carried on for some time past, but of late some '■ of the upper districts are said to be simply over-run with shooters, Sunday after Sunday. Shooting m this way is not only unseemly and illegal, but quite opposed to the most ordinary rules of social courtesy. No one has a right to trespass on private property for the sake of gratifying his personal deaire to take life, and no one with the least knowledge or notion of manners would do so without openly asking and fully receiving the consent of the owner of the property m every case. But not only are these considerations overlooked by the offenders, for they are negligent with regard to closing gates, and too often think it nothing that their dogs run among sheep, to the inconvenience and loss of the farmers. People of this description should be prosecuted on every occasion, and m every case punished to the full extent sanctioned by the law.
