Lecturing m Blenheim on Monday night on tho subject "Words," Mr Justice Cooper stated that "chivalry" is a word which carries us back to those times when it was-the privilege as well as the duty of every true knight to protect, even with his heart's blood, the -weaker $ex. It is deriyec] from chevalier, a horseman, and denoted the character of those knightserrant who were always ready to succour any distressed damsel. In these days, however, according to Lord Mountmorris, who has recently written an article on chivalry, it is dead, strangled by the emancipation of woman, of her assumption of equality with man, and by her demand for tho suffrage. But Mr Justice Cooper does not himself take tho view that "the age of chivalry is dead."

Parliamentarians returning home state that within the next few weeks an important political gathering will bo held m Auckland to mark the past services of Mr W. Fi Massey m the interests of tho Opposition party, and the splendid progress which it has recently made. " The Tangoio estate, Hawke's Bay, and the Orari Gorge property, Canterbury,' comprising between BQOO and 9000 acres each, will be opened, for selection early m March next. Delivery is not given the Government till the end of March. Surveyors are now at work on Tougoio, and they will start the subdivision of Orari m the spring. Several other estates are now under negotiation between the owners ■ and tho Land Purchase Board. .

A Press Association telegram, from Wellington states that th© time within which the Timber Commission is to report has been extended to June 30. It has been decided that" all ewes entered for sale m the fat pens at the Addington yards after the current week must be guaranteed free from lamb; A recent arrival from Scotland' is making a specialty at the Hook, Waimate, of pig-rearing on modern lines. He has a herd of 100 pigs, and expects to be able to show farmers that the pig is not only one of the most profitable animals, but one of the cleanest. A pure Devon weaner was sold to a Taranaki fancier for £6 6s last week. A missionary "at home" was held on Thursday afternoon Bt the residence of Mrs L. G. McDonald, Allenton. Miss Gainsford, a missionary at present on furlough, gave an address on " The Women of India." The gathering was held under the auspices of the Ashburton Baptist Women's Missionary Union." At a meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board on Wednesday, it was reported that a letter had been received from the ' Ashburton Technical Classes Association, expressing the hope that the Board would accept the Council's offer of a leasehold site on which to erect a new technical school. The Board was recommended to reply that it saw no special reason to alter the opinion previously formed and already communicated to the Ashburton centre. Mr D. The question of the filthy condition m which some farmers send-lambs to the freezing works was discussed by the Farmers' Union at Christchurch on Wednesday last. The opinion was expressed that drastic steps should _be taken, m the interests of the. freezing industry,, and for the sake of the men who had to handle such stock, to remedy the evil. A Press Association telegram from Timaru states that H. ,V. Austin, licensee of the Hibernian Hotel, was fined £5 for selling liquor, and' five men were fined £1 each for drinking after hours. The defence offered was that the liquor was bought, served and drunk before closing time, and the men had business m the hotel. It was shown that the licensee was laid up at the time, and the Magistrate stated that he would not endorse the license.

The prevalence of influenza:amongst the horses of Canterbury induced Mr J. R. Charlton, M.R.C.V.S., to obtain from Professor Bosanquet, a European investigator, a supply of antitoxin. This Mr Charlton has thoroughly, tested with very satisfactory results. The early application of the influenza antitoxin, he says, appears, to reduce the duration of an attack, and its use seems to prevent the development of aggravated phenomena or undesirable complications. ' A hockey match between teams representing . Married and Single was played m the Domain on Thursday, and resulted m a win for the married players by 4 goals to 2. Goals 1 for the married players were scored by R. Meechan (2), H. Millichamp, and C. Wilson, one each; J. Kennedy, for the single men, registering two goals, Mr H. A. Humphreys was the umpire. Afternoon tea was^provided by the ladies interested. Wellington housewives (says a city paper) notice a great disparity of prices for any given "cut" at different shops within a stones-throw of each other. Prime well-fed beef can be bought at one shop for 4£d, across the road for s£'d, a few yards, further on for 6£d, and at the customer's door for Bd. The careful housewife has already got into the habit of buying m a shop, where she has the additional satisfaction of seeing the meat weighed. It has been decided by the members of the St. Andrew's Young Women's Bible Class to forma basket ball club, and a practice game was played on Thursday at the residence of- Misses Askin, Beach road. There was a fair number of members present, and Miss McCasker, who has volunteered to teach the game, performed her duties m an able manner. It. will be at.least three weeks before a full team, can be chosen, as much practice will be required before the game is thoroughly understood. The employees of the Ashburton' branch of the Farmers' Co-operative Association held their annual social m the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance of the employees and their; friends, over ninety couples taking part m the dancing. The floor was m first-class order, and much credit is due to the committee for the artistic taste displayed m decorating the hall with tree ferns, miniature flags, suxd draping, which was done under the supervision of Mr James Brown (the secretary). Music was supplied by Fox's band and the duties of Masters of. the Ceremonies were carried out by Messrs, W I age and A. Cambridge. .An excellent supper was provided by the female employees of the firm, and was served under the supervision of Miss Stock.
