FIRE IN A TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.

Per Press Association. WANGANUI, June 18. A fire broke out this morning m the Telephone Exchange. Some linemen were working on the wires m the Av--1 enue, when one of the men let a wire slip, and it came m contact with a tramway trolley wire. The effect was instantaneous, and every shutter on the distributing board m the Telephone Office was immediately going up, to the amazement of the operators. It was soon afterwards discovered that the tar jute, etc., round the cables m the ceiling of the telephone room were on fire. The flames ran rapidly along th wires, but were subdued by the telephone officials before the arrival of the Brigade, Considerable damage was done by water, though the officials took every 'precaution to protect the mechanism. The local telephone service is disorganised by the contact, but it is hoped to completely restore all communication m a day or two.
