INTERPRETATION OF AN AWARD.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. The Arbitration Court has given an interpretation under clause 8 of the Canterbury Hotel and Restaurant Employees award. The question submitted was: Could servants be compelled now to become members of the Union who had been in the service of an; hotelkeeper at the time the award came into force, but who were now working for another .employer, who had since purchased an hotel ? The Court decided that if there had been no break in the service and, if the purchaser took over the servants with the hotel, they did not come within the scope of clause 8, and would not, therefore, be compelled to join the Union.
