HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

An adjourned meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs J. Tucker (m the chair), W. B. Denshie W. H. Collins, and 0. Reid. Apologies werei received from Mr S. S. Chapman and the Mayor, Mr H. Davis. The chairman reported that the credit balance on the general account amounted to £847 10s sd, and the debit balance on the loan account to £2249 lls; that was to say, they were £1200 overi drawn. The Education Department, Wellington informed the Board that his Excellency the Governor had appointed Mr 0. Reid a member of the Board. The Department also wrote stating that the Board's letter with reference to the number of members on the. Board would .receive consideration. The Department notified that a sum of £404 3s'4d, being capitation grant on free pupils, had. been;handed over to the Audit and Treasury for transmis-. sion to the Board's account' at the Union Bank of Australia. ■'. The Inspector-General of Schools wrote stating that the request for the issue of free railway passes to enable Chertsey children to travel to the Ashburton High School, via Rakaia, must be declined, m accordance with the final decision of the Railway Department.— Received and resolved to acquaint Mrs "Wilkinson with the terms of the letter. The Education Department informed the Board that a voucher is being passed for payment of capitation on account-.of 97 units of attendance at the Ashburton High School. It was stated that m the Board's claim no reduction had obviously been made for incomplete attendances m the case of departures and new entrants.—Received. . , The Secretary for Education informed the Board, under date June 9, that a notice declaring the Ashburton High School Board to be a leasing authority under the Public Bodies Leases Act 1, 1908, would appear m that week's New Zealand Gazette. —Received. Henry W. Mayor B.Sc, 8.A., and L.C.P., forwarded testimonials, which he asked the Board to file m case of any vacancy arising on the staff.^—Received. The chairman stated that Messrs Taylor and Oakley, having been granted an extension of time for completing their contract, had agreed to undertake the work of providing additional heating for the school at a cost'of £60. The secretary of the Summer School Council applied for the use; of the High School ;as sleeping quarters for a number of thos? who would be attending the Summer Conference, which was proposed to be held m Ashburton m December and January.—The matter was deferred for consideration till the next meeting. Mr R. G. Macdonald forwarded a copy of the Roderick map, showing the possessions of every nation, its naval bases, etc., which the Board was asked to purchase at a cost of 10s 6d.—Referred to the Headmaster. The Headmaster reported that the school re-opened on Tuesday, Ist instant with an attendance of 110 pupils. The roll number is 118; 62 boys and 56 girls. Three pupils had left and one had been admitted. ' , The Finance Committee recommended the following increases m the teacher's salaries: Headmaster £35, assist-ant-master £25, headmistress £20, as-sistant-.mistress £20, the two latter to include .shorthand teaching. The report was adopted. Messrs Chapman and Reid were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month, and the matter or building a tool-shed and dressing-room was referred to this committee.
