Upon being searched, Is 2d was found m his possession, and his loud protestation of innocence and the absence of any real evidence against him led to his release. However, upon making further enquiries, it was fouhd that the suspect had entrusted £1 to the care of a friend, and, confirmed m his first suspicions, Constable O'Grady visited a whare on the riverbed where J the young man had lodgings with a rag-gatherer. The visit was not unexpected by the Maori, and he had concealed-himself beneath a heap of old clothes. Curiosity led him to push his.head through the clothes as the constable entered, and great was his surprise to discover a policeman standing over him.
