He was riddeli' by a West Australian jockey named Egan, and passed the judge's box for the first _ time six lengths ahead. Egan, under the impression that he had' wori^ eased off, but. the shouts of the specta-* tors and. the pace of the other horses made him realise that he had miscalculated tli£ distance. To. the surprise; of everyone, Leo Grand caught the leaders in a dozen strides* but> in the straight again he stumbled, and got ricj. of Eganj an outsider- winning., Thja stewards severely reprimanded: Egah for carelessness...
