Per .Press Association.. . . f ■.- . > '; AUCKLAND, June 14. -\ At' the Supreme Court, Henry Tera-Avhitiy-'a-vMaori, guilty of perjury, in whose case the jury made a recommend dation to mercy'on the ground that he had been the cat's-paw of a clever criminal, appeared for sentence. Mr Justice Edwards said the jury did not., knofiv the facts as he did. Had not the isolicitor in the case in which ; the perjury was committed concealed a shorthand writer in the room in which ■the- conversation between the parties had been held, another man -would have been convicted and Terawhiti would have gone free. The perjury, was committed with the object of getting another man convicted. It was a vicious and" serious offence, and a sentence of seven years' would be mi flicted. Richard White; with forty charges of theft, was sentenced to seveii years? imprisonment. His. Honour stated that the sentence was made more severe because, this being the first time of the man's capture, life 1 could not sentence him as an habitual, criminal; George Mack, for breaking I and entering and theft, and receiving, and -false pretences, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. William Knox, for theft of a periny-in-the-slot birdcage, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, and declared an habitual criminal. Edward Knox, for receiving stolen property,, was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. ' ■■-.. '■
