Wellington city's revenue on general account for the current year is estimated at £142,627, and the expenditure at £141,497, says a Press Association telegram.; I H. P. Madden was proceeded against 'by the Inspector of Awards at the Magistrate's Court this morning for a breach of tho Christchurch bakers award, m that he had failed to pay for overtime worked by his employees. The defendant was fined £2. A statement was mado by the defendant, m which a breach of the award was admitted, but he said he had been m the habit of paying over union rates to tho extent of 5s per week, as well as giving his employees bonuses from time to time He'was not aware until four or five weeks ago of tho clause m the award with regard to the payment of overtime rates. ; The House of Representatives' met Lit 10.30 this morning. Mr Herdman s Bill to deal with the Civil Service was ordered to be read that day fortnight, ; and the House adjourned at 16' clock.

A social was held at St. Stephen's schoolroom, last evening, under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild. There was a large gathering of parishioners arid friends, and a very pleasant evening was concluded with a most excellent supper. During the evening musical items were given by Mrs Wilson, Miss Cox, Messrs H. A. Gates, Templeton and Claridge. The choir also gave two anthems. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Claridge. In the Supreme Court, Dunedin, today, Mr Justice Williams reserved his decision on a motion to quash the conviction of Mr Hutchison, S.M., of Albert Bond for taking whisky into the No-License district of Oamaru. Branches of the National Defence League were formed last night at Wanganui and at Blenheim. For the tournament to be held m the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, under the auspices of the South Canterbury Boxing Association, Ashburton Centre, good entries have been received, and a full evening of clean sport is giiaranteed.
