Though no definite statement has yet been made, it is understood that the Imperial authorities have expressed a view that the cause of defence will be best served, not by providing a. Dreadnought, but m some other way. A CREDITABLE NEW ZEALANDER A recent new arrival from New Zealand, while staying at a Melbourne cafe, robbed a portmanteau which contained a bank book for £1200 m a New South Wales saving bank. The man, while trying to work on the account, was arrested yesterday m Sydney. All the missing property has been recovered. "THE FILTHIEST CITY IN THE CIVILISED WORLD." The Age newspaper, m an article dealing with the condition of the city, says that, m all weathers, and at all seasons, Melbourne persists m being one of the filthiest cities m the civilised world. During the recent wet weather the whole city at night was anointed with pure beastliness. Collins street was similarly carpeted with filth. The paper strongly denounces the citizens for allowing such a state of things.
