LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The result of the poll for the election of a member of the Education Board, to till the vacancy for" the' North Canterbury Ward caused by the resignation of the Hon. D. Buddo, was declared on Tuesday. Mr Hugh Boyd being returned. The polling was as follows :—Mr H. Boyd 141, Mr 11. Moore 131, Mr ■ S.-'Bullock 106, Rev. I. A. Bernstein 43. There was a good attendance at Mr C. L. Wragge's' concluding lecture, m" the Oddfellows' Hall last evening,, on !' The Majesty of Creation." Mr Wragge was frequently applauded, and his visit to Ash burton has been much appreciated., Mr E. Mahood has received intimation from Mr S. F. Whitcombe, District Traffic Manager, that instructions have been given to open the Methven railway station gates before , the departure of the morning train and leave them open till after the ar-i rival of the evening train. This will be a convenience to passengers with parcels to sec to. ■ The ordinary weekly meeting of the Ashburton Good Templara' Lodge was held on Wednesday evening, with Bro. W. A. Saudoe, 0.T., m the chair. Three new members were initiated, and two were proposed for membership. After the transaction of other routine business, the lodge adjourned at an early hour, , Ten thousand pounds m wages will be paid within the next six months to' forty NeAv Zealanders who will be discharged from H.M.S. Pioneer, now m port at Wellington. These men joined the Pioneer five years ago, under the Imperial Naval agreement of 1903. During the time they have been, on the Pioneer they have received the "Home rate" of pay as pocket money and for incidental expenses, while the additional , money which is paid to them to make up the colonial rate has been, banked'to each man's credit by' the Admiralty. Each of the men has the sum of £250 m the bank, which'he caii draw-the moment his five years' service has been completed. They are all young men, and Commander Blunt remarked to' a New Zealand' Times representative: "They are grand material, and it is a pity that under the agreement they cannot re-enlist. At Home they do not count a bluejacket a man til} ho has served his five years.'': ' ' ' It has been suggested by Mr Wragge that Ashburton should add to the meteorological observatory m the Domain an astronomical observatory. Ten pounds would be sufficient to purchase an instrument, and the observatory would be a means of education and enjoyment to many, While on this point, Mr Wragge urged that astronomy should be taught m the public schools m New Zealand, as it is m the schools of many other countries.
