The Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1909.

Mr John Studholme is I Mr Studholme certainly not a man and \ who grows weary m Domestic well doing. When his Science. generous offer of £200 a year for three years towards the cost of establishing a Chair of Domestic Science at the Canterbury College fell through, chiefly m consequence of the marriage of the American lady who was to have filled the position, it might reasonably have been supposed that that would have ended the matter; but MrStudhdlme's generosity, is of the robust kind, and he has shown the persistency which might be expected m one of his siricer-. ity and public spirit. At the outset; the offer was not carelessly made, and it was not till Mr Studholme had satisfied himself of the need for such a branch of science being taught, that he entered on a definite course of action. And he has now renewed his offer, but this time to the Otago University, arid there is every likelihood that the offer will be accepted. The University Council is sympathetically considering the whole subject, arid the Minister of Education has writ \ on that, m the event of a course m Domestic' Science being established, the course should be such as to recrVY the Vniversity standard,, and should n<-.t olafsh m any Way with the course t;ikc-u at the technical schools. Apart from insisting on this, which will doubtless meet with the approval of Mr Studholme and the Senate, the Department offers no objection, and will make the usual grants. Other financial assistance has been offered m Dunedin, and there is a strong probability that the Chair of Domestic Science will be established at the Otago University. A special meeting of the Council is to be held at an early date, when fuller consideration will be given to the proposal. Meanwhile,. Mr Studholme has been thanked for his offer, and a sub-com-mittee has been appointed to confer with Dr Truby King and Dr Batchelor, who had offered, on behalf of certain Diraedin subscribers, to guarantee a portion'of the money required, out of the funds held m trust by them.

A fairly large number Out of men out of employof ment have been repeatWork. edly applying at the various local labour bureaux for work, and at the end of the* present month, when the. greater part of the crops will have been sown, there is a probability that the ranks of the unemployed will be added to. Yet there is this paradox: a number of farmers state that they are unable to secure the services of competent men to drive teams. One farmer says that he and many others are working shorthanded : while another states that there should be no difficulty for any good all 7 round farm worker gaining employment ; but, he adds, with some bitterness, "this class of man is somewhat of a rarity nowadays." "Men who walk round the streets," says another farmer, "cannot expect to find work." Another well-known farmer states that he has great difficulty, m getting competent men. On more than one occasion he has' engaged men- m the. streets, ,and. although they./have-vpro-mised to turn up next morning, they have failed to do so; and he .has come to the .conclusion that such men do npt 'want work. "When I engage .a man now," he remarks, "I take his swag home with me as a guarantee of good faith ; but some of the unemployed will not allow me to carry this, practice into effect." Still, to Judge by the statements made by various' workers, themselves, there is a dearth of work for men who do not happen to be experienced teamsters.
