FLEMINGTON-WATERTON WATER SERVICE.
At yesterday's meeting of the County Council, a deputation consisting of Messrs C. Dawson and T. White (of the Flemington-Waterton district) waited on the Council to enter their protest against a certain water-race being; cut off. If the race, as proposed by the Council, were cut off, the former would be entirely deprived of a water service, and the latter objected to his paddocks being cut up by the proposed new line of race. The chairman said that a* number of years ago Mr Win. Baxter (the Council's late engineer) had surveyed the district, and had recommended that a race should be taken over a certain line: but the settlers interested disregarded Mr Baxter's proposal, and had obtained a water supply by means of ditches, which was very unsatisfactory. The Council had come to the conclusion that this amateur water service would never prove satisfactory or-reliable if €he race were not shifted and properly constructed. Mr Studholme pointed out that the Council had to consider the largest body of settlers interested, but, with Mr Lambie. he was perfectly convinced that the present line of ditches that was serving as a race would never prove satisfactory till the : recommendation of the Council was carried out. The chairman also pointed out thnt the present race had been very much .neglected by those farmers through whose properties it ran. When the committee had visited the district it had been seen that Mr Dawson's'property would be cut off. but the present levels of the race, would not admit of the water running satisfactorily and without intermission./ The Council had to consider whether it was justified m permitting water to run m a wasteful way. The deputation then withdrew, and later m the day Messrs R. Mugford, W. Jaine and I. Reid waited on the Council with respect to the same service, and made a general objection to the past control of the race, and to the proposed change m the line of the service. The objections made by the deputation were generally discussed' m a conversational way, and it was subsecruently decided that the overseer (Mr Morrison) should meet those interested m.the race on the ground, and ndvise the settlers of the date on which tha visit would be made.
