A large number of members of both branches of the Legislative went north to-day. . A meeting of the Etham branch of the National Defence League last night unanimously passed a resolution favouring a system of universal military training. At Mr T. de Spong's entertainment at the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday evening next, Madame Paddon and Air W. Anderson will contribute vocal solos, and Miss Claridge will act as accompanist and solo pianist. Mr de Spong's abilities are well-known, and should draw a good house. The entries so far received for the Boxing tournament, . to be held on June 11th under the auspices of the Ashburton Boxing Association,' establish a record. Each of the classes is well filled, those for the chief'events being exceptionally so. Entries have been received from Christchnurch,, Timaru and Ashburton'. A meeting of the Empire Day Patriotic Demonstration Committee was held last evening, with the Mayor ■m the chair. The balance sheet showed that after paying all expenses amounting to £42, 17s lOd, a small credit balance remained, which will be carried forward for next year.
