ELLESMERE v. ASHBURTON.
The Ellesincrc and Ashburton representatives met at Christchurch yesterday. Ellesmere had a strong set of forwards, and they kept their opponents defending almost throughout the first spell. Feldwick scored a try for JDllesmere, and kicked a goal, and the same player also kicked a goal from a penalty. The game m the first part of the second spell 'was even, but the 1/llesmere forwards again began-to beat the opposition m the open work, and, aided by hard kicking by the backs, they were soon at. the Ashburton line. There they played hard to score, but the backs made little use of their opportunities, and, though, they should have scored more than once, they could not cross the line. The game ended without further score, Ellesmere winning by eight points! to nil. Mr C. W. Hervey was referee.
