This represents a profit of £9 9s per acre, from which has to be deducted about 30 for working expenses. On the same farm, from a total area of 790 acres, Mr Sinclair obtained the handsome yield of 50 bushels of wheat per aero.
At the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr H. Davis, Justice of the Peace, James Ritchie, a cook, was brought up under a warrant on a charge that, he being a material witness in the sly grog case against Wm. Porter, would not attend to give evidence without being compelled to do so. The accused had been arrested by Constable McLeod at the Snowdon station early yesterday morning. Sergeant Fouh'v stated that Ritchie had been wanted by the police as a witness in the ease against Porter; but, knowing that ho would not attend to give evidence without being compelled to do so, steps were taken to ensure his presence at the Court during the hearing of the case. Ritchie, however, suddenly disappeared, and the police had been searching for him ever since. On the application of Sergeant Fouhy, the accused was remanded till next Friday, and was bound over on his own surety for a sum of £10 to appear before the Court on that day, and was also ordered to report himself to the police every ■evening till then. This morning's river report reads as follows: Rakaia, fishable; Ashburton (both branches), clear; Rangitata, fishable.
