ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
AUCKLAND, March 1. While Percy Bennett, 17 years of ago, was swimming oft" Chelsea on fc-at-nrday, ho was seen to throw up iiis arms and sink. The <!i>ad body was subsequently recovered. iJonncit was a strong swimmer, and it is supposed that he was seised with cramp. ELTHAM, March 1. John Jones, who was about 45 years of age and.a labourer employed at Matapu, was returning home from Eltham on Saturday night, when he was thrown from his horse and killed. An inquest" will he held to-day. AUCKLAND, February 28. James Butler, a single man, aged 23, was drowned at Devonport shortly before 1 o'clock yesterday. Butler, who was employed by the Devonport Borough Council, arrived home shortly after mid-day, and went out immediately for a. bathe on the beach. At about five minutes to 1 o'clock two men, Clifford Carryer and 1-1. E. Coope, who were bathing near by, saw deceased coming ashore, calling out as ho did so. They swam out towards him, but he sank before they could reach him, and some ten minutes elapsed before the body was recovered. Dr Aitkinson endeavoured to induce artificial respiration for about 40 minutes, but without success. Deceased was a'son of the manager of the Central Mine at Broken Hill.
