A number of the Musical j:oople of Aeiihurton have docii.!ed t-.: tender a •benefit performance at an early date to Mrs Kannen, the heroine of the Penguin disaster. A. first class programme is being arranged, and the concert will be given under the patronage of the Mayor (Mr Henry Davis). _ The New Zealand Fanners' Cooperative Association, Ltd., reports that it disponed of Mr R. Rcd'declift'o's farm of 14-13 acres, at the Hinds, to Mr C. Hurley, at a satisfactory price. An Ashburton farmer yesterday stated that he had to refuse 3slod per bushel (f.0.b.) for a large line of velvet wheat, in consequence of his not having it threshed ready for immediate delivery. An Australian message states that the depression in the Newcastle district is so acute that many miners are on the verge of starvation. The ordinary weekly meeting of the Ashburton Oddfellows' Lodge, Manchester Unity, was held last evening. There was a fair attendance of members anc^Bro. A. Childs, N.G., presided. The district lodge balance sheet was presented and approved, and other ordinary routine business was transacted. Mr J. Smith, of Saltwater Creek, has just threshed a field of barley which yielded a little over 50 bushels per acre.
