A report prepared by the United Clerks' Union states that the vast body of office workers who come under the definition of clerk are subject to conditions of absolute sweating which are rapidly becoming worse. They do not receive sufficient pay to maintain themselves independently m a single conditon of life, let alone' maintain' a household. The renort. .admits that m many instances employers are not more to blame than the clerks, who under pressure of competition permit themselves to'be- ground down as regards: pay and overtime.
