AUCKLAND, August 9, The criminal sessions of the Auckland" Supreme Court were continued before j.'.ir Justice penniston yesterday. A ciiarge of attempting to steal sheep belonging to H. 6. Glass, of Boardwood, near itawene, on April 26, *-as preferred against James Ueorge Ferguson, a respectably dressed man about thirtylive or forty years old. He pleaded not guilty. The accused owned property on the onnosito side of the road. The accused, on oath, stated that he possessed close on 20U0 acres of land in the Hokianga district, most of which was freehold. On his section adjoining Mr Glass's property at Boardwood, he had some sixty, sheep and a similar number of cattle. He denied the charge, but* in the course of examination admitted, that when he was twenty years of age he had been convicted of stealing a pig, and he had also been convicted of assault. His Honour having summed up, the jury returned half an hour later With a verdict of guilty. Constable Beasley stated that accused bore a very bad character in the district. His Honour then passed a sentence of two years' imprisonment with hard labour. David- Remnaut was, arraigned on a charge of committing a serious offence upon a girl under sixteen years, at Hamilton, on July 25. He was found guilty, and sentenced to seven years' jmprisonment.
