SHOOTING.
MAJOR HAYHURST'S CUP.
The annual competition among the Mounted Rifle Corps of South Canterbury for the cup presented by Major Hayhurst, was held yesterday, the South Canterbury, Studholmo, Ashburton and Mackenzie companies sending teams of ten men each. A. cold breeze off the sea made the day rather unpleasant for shooting. The conditions of the match require three ranges to'be fired from 500, 600, and 700 yards. Before the first ranges had been completed the afternoon was well advancad and the Studholma team desiring to return by the express train the officers in charge of the teams met and agreed that the match should be decided by two ranges. This decision occasioned some grumbling among the Timaru and Ashburton men.
The following were the scores:— Studholme M.R.-SOOyds, 295 ; 600 yds, 260. Total, 555.
South Canterbury M.R.—sooyds, 272; 600 yds, 226, Total, 498.
Totals .. 252 221-426 Mackenzie M.R.—-SOOyds, 225; 600 yds, 201. Total, 426.
