PETITION FOR A FURTHER , INQUIRY.

Wellington, Sept. 6 Tho House mot at 2.30.

Mr Taylor presented a petiticc from Messrs Willis, Larccmbe, West, and Lundon, praying for. a full public enquiry into into theallf.gad payment to Capt.Bed.Jon. After considerable discussion, the petition was referred to the M to Z Publio Petitions Committed.

Sir Joseph Ward referred to the published statement by Mr Taylor that he did not think Sir Joseph Ward would, in the face of public opinion, dismfrs these men, and that, if anyone was lo go, it would be Sir Joseph Waid. As Minister in charge of the Postal Department ha had refrained from saying anything that would savour of intimidation. There had been no interference witli them in any re?pect whatever, but any iaference that ma.de the suggestion that he was afraid to do his duty to the public, was entirely wrong. The public looked to him to do what was right to officers and the public, and when the time arrived, he should do his duty and ask the House and public to stand by him.
