Indications of warmer weather are now forthcoming, and if these be fulfilled a bountiful harvest may confidently be anticipated. A very prolific yield of potatoes was obtained by a Lyttelton resident, Mr C. Evans, of Brenchley road, from a plot of ground measuring 18ft by 60ft. He planted 701 b of seeds and dug recently 14171 bof good saleable potatoes. The seed used was assorted pink and whits Beauty of Hebron. To protect the railway revenues, a new by-law has been made to punish persons who wilfully make a false declaration or statement; with tho object of obtaining a concession of freight or a reduction of a passenger fare. The maximum penalty is £10. A Levin paper says that the friends of a certain solicitor have beau uneasy over his prolonged absence from Levin, fearing that nomothing had happened. Two or three were inclined to send out a search party. It will interest his acquaintances to know that when he left Levin last month he went down south.
