Crime in Auckland.
AvSBAULT ON A YOUNG WOMAN United Press Association—By Electrio Telogvaph. Auckland, Jan 31 Rose Thomas, aged 18 years, lesiding at Avondale, was tbe victim of a strious assault. She states that, she was walking along the main road about 200 yards from the Avonda'.e Hotel, whin a man rushed on her from the dai knesa nnd seized her by the throat. He made hd improper suggestion, and it is alleged threatened to blow out her brains with a revolver which he had m his hand. He then, it is alleged, dragged her some yards off tho road, threw her into the ditch and attempted to commit a most serious offence. Some' women who were passing disturbed the man, who at once ran off. Information was given to Constable O'Grady, who is stationed at Avondale, and he. obtained from Miss Thomas the description of her assailant. This morning at the Police Court a man named John Hughes was charge-1 with the crime and reminded till next Monday on bail
