Mount Somers Sports and Races.

A largo number of Ashburfconites journeyed t> Mount Souiers yesterday. They were joined on the way by continents from other stations, and by the time the train arrived at Mount Somers there were fully 10C0 on board. The weather was beautifully fine, and no accidents occurred to mar the pleasure of the day. A long Hue of horse 3 and vehicles ranged undernor-.th the finely grown plantation of treea oa the north nnd west sides of the course showed that tho district was also well represented. The committee had spared no pains in striving that every detail should be carried out to the satisfaction of all, and tboy are to be warmly congratulated on providing sii'h a good day's outing. Bandmaster Ryan, of MayfieW, and his fellow musicians were on the ground, and the numerous seleoticns they played won favourable comments from the visitors. As against £20 lakc-n at the pates last year, the sum of 'MO was taken yesterday. The energetic secretary, Mr W. J. Bennet, and his assistant are deserving'of a word of praise for the manner in which they carried out their duties. Towards the fiuish the events were got off somewhat behind time; but possibly with such & full programme that was unavoidable. Some delay was caused after the Anauia Handicap through Mauserine's ridor having some difficulty in drawing weight; but the Stewards were eventually satisfied that the race should go to Mauserine. The number of bookmakers on the course this year was three more than called the odds last year, and th-y appeared to do a brisk business The short priced horse 3 prevailed in most of the races, and honours between layers and takers of odds were about tven. The starting was generally good, the worst effort being in the Hack race In one or two races the non-triers was in evidence, especially in one race, where no pains were taken to hide the horse's mission.
