The men'a scratch single tournament) for the championship of the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club, was completed on Jfriday last, when G. F. Salmond defeated P. H. Cox, the runner-up, m a Bplendidly fought out match. ' In the first set, Cox settled 4own to wprk very quietly, and playing hia usual steady game,' defeated Salmond 6-3. However, the j latter was not to be denied, and although Cox was playing well, managed to win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2, The play throughout waa of a high order, and some excellent rallies resulted, although the light appeared to trouble the players at times, The following are the results of the various games ; — First Round—P H Cox beat V Steward, 6-2 60, W Johnston beat H H Fooks, 4-6, 6-1, 64. C F Salmond beat R H Upton, 10-8, 6-4. Second Round—Cox beat Shoriaud, 6-3, 6-4. Salmond beat Johnston, 8-6, 6-1. Final Round —Salmond beat Cox, 3-6,6-3, 6-2. ■ mmmmmm
