Messrs Friedlander Bros, report on the live stock market for the week as follows :— The usual weekly sale was held at the Ashburton yards on Tuesday, October 23, at which there was a fairly representative gathering of all those interested m the stock trade. 'J he entries m the butchers' pens comprised some really good line 3of shorn fat ewea, both crossbred and merino, and also merino wethers. The bidding on the part of the trade was, however, very lifeless, and several lots were passed m at the hammer, although most of these were sold afterwards at figures higher than the bidding at auction. This slackness on the part of competitors has a bad effect, as several farmers reel that they must look for a better market for their fat stock. The result will be that the best lines will be sent elsewhere for sale, unless the competition keeps up to the values of stock entered for sale. In the Btore pens, the entry comprised lines of woolly and shorn hoggets, two and four-tooth sheep, and ewes and lambs, for which competition was brick, for better sorts, We topped the market again with a line of 43 vpry prime hoggets, on account of Mr Williamson, Elgin, at 14a 91, and for another client we obtained 13s 10;t for 200.
