THE PACIFIC CABLE
Lohdon, October 25 Mr W. H. Mercer, of the Colonial Office, who accompanied Mr Sandford Fleming to Hawaii to negotiate for the landing place of the Pacific cable on Neckar Island, asked for a lease of the island and a Hawaiian subsidy of £76,000 for fifteen years. He made an offer to lay a cable to Honolulu, and make the public rate Is per word, with a lower rate for press and Government work, conditionally on Hawaii ceding the island to Great Britain m the event of the United States annexing Hawaii. Tt is now reported that Hawaii is willing to consider the matter if a lower subsidy is acceptsd and the provision of the cession of the island deleted.
