FOOTBALL.
ASHBURTON 11. V RAKAIA.
There was a large number of spectators at the football match between Rakah and Ashburton Second teama played at the Domain on Saturday afternoon, and a well contested and exciting game resulted in favor of the local team by one try and one goal (five points), to one potted goal (four points). Rakaia was the first to score, Bruce kicking a goal from a mark in the first spell. The visitors were superior in the forward department and almost invariably carried the scrimmages, but the fine work of the Aehburton backs kept the play tor the most part in Rakaia's territory. Only splendid tackling on the part of the opposing backs, prevented Ashburton from scoring repeatedly, and when at last Upton got over and scored in the second spell, he only did so by carrying three or four of the Rakaia team over the line with him. The £tck at goal was entrusted to Smith, and Fas neatly converted! for the winners the whole team played well together but H. Curtis, Pntchard, Purchase and Upton exhibited fine back play, running and passing splendidly. For Rakaia, the best of a good all round team were Laraman, Bruce and Rouse (Captain). Mr J. Cow successfully ferformed the arduous duties of referee.
