New Plymouth, August 11. It Is reported by Mr Robinson of the Survey office, who is in ur>per Waitotara. that two men on the Government cooperative works wen drowned on August 3. The name 3 are James Drink water md Geo. Hawkins. It appears the men went up the river in a canoa with the intention of going over the rapide, but neither have been since seen. The river was heavily flooded ab the time. The broken canoe has been found. Wflunciton, August 11. The proprietor of the Albert hotel was to-day fined £10 and costs for selling after hours, *nd the keeper of a house of ill fame was fined similarly for sly grog selling. The frra'fon leaves Qnehungi this afternoon for Wellington with the San Francisco mail, and will arrive to-morrow night. Ihe Taupo leaves for Lyttelton on Sunday morning with the southern portion, : DUUBDTN, August 11. F. P. O'fieilly, barrister, appeared at the City Court, charged with drunkenness and attempting to set fire to the King Street Police Court. He claimed to be a descendant of the Irish kings, and behaved so extraordinarily that the Bench remanded him for medical examination.
