Lord Kiraberley in adopting . the suggestion of Lord Ribblesdale, moved in the House of Lords for the appointment of a committee, including Lord Winchelsea, Lord Onslow, and Lord Carrington, to consider the question of marking colouia.l produce. In the House of Lords Lord Ribblesdale has moved that a select committse be appointed to report on the legislation required to compel foreign and colonial meat, cheese, and fruit, to bear a mark of where they were produced.

THEATRICAL.

Mr Edward Terry, the comedian, sailed in the Ophir for Melbourne, under engagement to Messrs Williamson and Musgrove. He visits New Zealand.

LORD MAYOR KNILL.

The City Aldsrmen passed a motion condemning Lord Mayor Knill's toast to the Pope at the banquet to Cardinal Vaughan. The Lord Mayor denied that he had exalted the Pope above the Queen, and regretted he had been misunderstopd.

SCOTCH DISESTABLISHMENT BILL.

The Scotch Disestablishment, Bill introduced by Mr 0. Cameron, M.P. for Glasgow College, was read a first time by a majority of 66.

NAVAL DESERTION.

New Tobk, May 9. Wholesale desertions are reported from the British warships which took part in the Columbus festival. One vessel is said to have lost as many as seventy men.
