SOUTH RAKAIA-FRIDAY,
(Before Messrs W. L, Allan, C. Hardy, and L. Oxley, Justices of the Peace.) Civil Cask.—W. Cromie v. A. Spring, 10s, balance of account Judgmeut for plaintiff by default with costs. Stray Cattlk —W. Stubbs was charged with allowing six head of cattle to be at large on the railway. Defendant pleaded not guilty* At the request of the po.ice the information was amended to read one head of cattle. Defendant did not object, and still p'eaded not guilty. Evidence was given that on April 10, just north of the Uakaia bridge, a number of cattle were run into by the express and one killed. Detendant, although he had admitted the ownership of the calf killed to the bridgekeeper, now denied the same, at the same time admitting that he had removed the carcase and given it to his pigs some mile and a half way. After hearing the evidence the case was dismissed, and the police instructed to make further enquiry. -H. Primmer, for allowing cattle to be at large on the railway was fined 33 and costs. —J. Santy, for allowing a horse to wander on the railway, did not nppear, and was fined 5s and costs. All the other cases were settled or withdrawn.
