THE GAMBIER DISASTER.
Melbourne, September 1. < Two steerage passengers named' Miller and Quinn, who were reported to be drowned m the Gam bier, travelled by another steamer. This reduces the | list of casualties to twenty-one. A passenger by the Gambier controverts the statement that the Easby's people were slow m coming to the rescue. He alleges the lashings of the Gambler's boats rendered ifc impossible to lower them m less than ten minutes. THE MANAPOURI. The Marine Board has decided to charge Captain Logan, of the Manapouri, with misconduct m connection with the recent mishap to his vessel. THE SHEARERS. The Victorian shearers have acceptc"--the arrangement arrived at with th c; Sydney Pastoral Convention. AYRSHIRE CATTLE. The Ayrshire cattle breeders are forming a society to maintain the purity of the breed. A DEFAULTING BANK CLERKA. warrant has been issued for the arrest of Bell, a clerk m the British Bank, which failed last month, on a chai-ge of mutilating the books, presumably to prevent detection, by destroying the records and entries.
