28 November 1848 Go off, my letter, to Wairarapa, that is, to Otaraia, to Kemp Sir, Greetings to you. I've another message for you. Listen, the place of the Maori he is talking about is the same and a much discussed subject amongst the people of Wairarapa. Now here, this part of our land, we are the Maori of this place, and I will not associate my chieftainship with that of the people of Wairarapa. Sir, Kemp, listen carefully. However, so be it for the people of Wairarapa, and the people of Te Kauru, leave them holding on to their land.
