The Press Bureau states that the transport Tyndareus 3 with a battalion of the Middlesex Regiment aboard, struck a miiie on February 9, off Capo Agulhas, in a strong south-easterly gale, and began to settle after the explosion, tho prdpellers showing. The men paraded in perfect order, the roll was called, and th-e order to "stand easy" was given. The whole battalion sang. Two steamers were despatched to the rescue, and arrived in half an hour. Although faced with tho probability of imminent death, the troops maintained the same steadfast courage and discipline. The incident occurred in the vicinity, where tho Birkenhead was lost. Thanks to the devotion and perseverance of the captain, officers, and engineers, the ship was saved, and readied Simmonstown, under her own steam. Two of the holds were flooded and another was leaking. The troops were landed. ■ The King expressed his deep admiration of all ranks for upholding the Birkenhead's cherished tradition.
