PICTON.

(Our Own Correspondent.) A little child of Mrs Adams's, of Waikawa Road, was badly burned through her clothes catching fire on Thursday evening. Years ago when first the Picton Literary Institute, then the " Mechanics Institute," was founded by the late Mr John Godfrey, one of its founders presented-—among other curiosities— a copy of the Auckland Times published in the year 1848. The paper was a copy of the first paper ever published in Auckland, and was printed on a mangle. The paper was evidently not appreciated as a curio, or otherwise, and could not be found for some time, till a lady who knew of its existence, and its value, set the committee to work to resurrect it. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Picton Borough Council the Mayor proposed to adjourn in sympathy for the death of the Premier. It was also resolved that a wreath should be sent from the town, and the Mayor said that he would attend' the funeral, if possible, as a representative of the Borough.
