NAZI ARMY NEARS MAXIMUM STRENGTH.

"Tlie Times" Berlin correspondent says that Germany is now reaching her maximum military preparedness. The standing Army comprises 39 divisions, between four and five light tank divisions, three mounted divisions and one cavalry brigade, totalling 850,000 men. Moreover 400,000 called up in April have not been released. A further «oO,0(*» were called up in June, while classes which have completed two years' service since 1935 have been called up for eight weeks' annual training and informed that they will not be released until mid-September. The peak will be reached at the end of August. Extensive manoeuvres of motorised formations, designed to test the mobility of tlie German forces under wartime conditions open next week. The Air Force is ready for any eventuality. Foreigners are watching the situation with some uneasiness. The prospects for the harvest are excellent. Butler, in the House of Commons said that in recent weeks there had been increasing military and indirect military activity in the Free City. The local situation was being carefully watched and the Polish Government was maintaining close contact with the British Government. The '"Daily Telegraph" Danzig correspondent says the Polish Government, in replying to the Nazi Senate's demand for fewer Polish Customs officers, urges respect for treaties, and adds that the inspectors' rights must be preserved. The rolish Army Chief, Marshal Smigly-Ridz, is to make an important speech at the week-end, which will be broadcast throughout Poland. TURKISH MANOEUVRES. BORDER OP BULGARIA. (Received 1.30 p.m.) ANKARA, August 4. The Turkish army is to begin largescale manoeuvres on the Bulgarian frontier on August 15.
