CLUBS KEPT BUSY

Gifts Greatly Assist A.N.A. Cafeteria Workers were kept busy in Wellington’s service clubs at the weekend. Many meals were served and every dance was crowded with servicemen. The A.N.A. Club cafeteria had an extremely busy week. Generous gifts from country donors added considerably to the variety of the menus served each day. The club wishes particularly to thank the Otaki and Te Horo women's emergency committees for the monthly hampers sent to the club since its inauguration three years ago. Thanks are . extended this week for gifts sent to the cafeteria from the following: —Two carcases sheep, Pukeatua Station, Hawke’s Bay; Otaki and Te Horo women’s emergency committees, per Miss M. Clarke and Mrs. 11. Blackburne, hamper of cakes; box of provisions, Mrs. G. Monk, Reikorangi; sacks of vegetables, Hutt Valley and Paraparaumu W.W.S.A., per Mrs. L. Pickard and Miss M. Loughnan. A series of large photographs, depicting scenes of New Zealand, have been given by , Mrs. W. Breach, and framed by Mr. J. M. G. Gibson and Messrs. Smith and Smith, Ltd. These have been hung in the ballroom annexe. Music for the dances has been provided by Mesdames Allen and Costello, Messrs. Costello and R. Laby, and Miss L. Chalker played extras. Lance-Corporal R. contributed vocal solos. Magazines and pictorials are urgently needed in the lounge, and the club would be grateful to any citizen forwarding some. Members of the Eastbourne W.W.S.A. acted as hostesses at the Y.M.C.A. tea last evening, with their convener, Mrs. Langford. Four hundred servicemen were entertained. Mr. S. Cross was chairman, and special guests were Dr. and Mrs. Isaacs and Miss Lysnar, Gisborne. Items ( were: Violin solo, Miss Laurie Anderson ; vocal solos, Miss Sylvia Devinie and Mr. H. Hindle; accordion solo, Mr. W. Wallace; elocutionary item, Miss Una Weller. The accompanists were Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. A. Ginn, and Mr. Mann, who aso piayed for community singing led by Mr. Hindle. Servicemen on behalf of those present expresesd thanks for the hospitality. Mrs. J. S. Martin and Mrs. W. Tailby were hostesses at the Y.W.C.A. entertainments at the weekend. The cafeteria was staffed by members of the Lower Hutt canteen group and Saturday’s supper was provided by the , Miramar League of Mothers. The usual helpers were on duty at the door and cloakrooms, helped by girls of the Y.W.C.A. residence. The Rev. R. Thornley conducted yesterday’s service and Mr. B. Langman and party provided the entertainment. A gift of vegetables was received from the Russell Terrace land group of the W.W.S.A.

A special Polish weekend was observed at the Catholic Services Club. At a gala dance on Saturday special guests were his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, Count ! Wodzicki, consul for Poland, and Countess Wodzicki, Rev.' Father Treaty, Dr. and Mrs. E. Griffin, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Scanlan, Mr. N. Scheinwald, Mrs. J. Gamble, Dr. Roland O’Regan. The Polish National Anthem was played as Count . and Countess Wodzicki arrived and the , Countess received a posy in red and white, . the Polish colours, from Miss K. Doherty. Special red and white decorations, sur- . mounted by an,eagle, were displayed with , a series of photographs depicting Polish , life. Polish folk dances were performed, the dancers wearing beautiful and autben- .' tic costumes. The ballet was trained by ‘ Mr. F. Rodgers. Archbishop O'Shea and Count Wodzicki spoke and a welcome was extended by Mr. F. J. G. Temm, chairman of the club. A presentation was ’ made to Miss P. Kelly, who has been : pianist'for two years. Last night' a film ; showing Poland before the war and after- ’ ward was screened, the Rev. Bro. Andrew ’ being thanked for the use of the pro- ; jector. Hostesses were Misses .W. Delaney, J. Gallagher, K. Redwood. 1 Messrs. Rouch, McNamara, Foley and 1 Eller gave help. The Lower Hutt land group of the W.W.S.A. sent a welcome gift of vegetables. ’ A gift of pork and another of spring cabbages from the Lower Hutt land group of the W.W.S.A. were received by the National Club, making welcome additions to meals. Mrs. H. E. Avery convened a group of helpers from Wellington East electorate yesterday and Misses P. Hogg and B. McLaren were hostesses at Saturday’s tea dance. "
