THIRD ANNIVERSARY

A.N.A. Club’s Contribution In Entertaining Forces Weekend reports are indicative of the extremely busy time experienced at the numerous service clubs operating in vv ellington for the benefit of men who are on leave. Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the opening of the Army, Navy and Air Force Club. The club, when inaugurated, only functioned at weekends, but its activities have grown apace, and it is now continuously open, catering in meals, recreation, and dancing, for thousands of Allied servicemen. The nightly dances are becoming very popular, and last week the music was provided by Mrs. J. L. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Costello, Miss L. Chalker, and Mr. N. Edlin. On Friday and Saturday nights the ballroom and annex were crowded, many American servicemen being present. The cafeteria committee extends grateful thanks to the following senders of provisions. Two carcases of sheep from Pukeatna Station, Hawke’s Bay, and hampers from the Dannevirke Women’s Patriotic Society, per Mrs. Smith; the Elsthorpe Women’s, Institute, per Miss Nancy Dillon, and the Tinui branch, W.D.F.U., per Mrs. James Andrew. The club would be grateful for gifts of magazines and pictorials, as they are urgently needed. .• ***** The Toe II Club’s gift committee would appreciate donations of edibles and flowers, particularly at the weekends, when catering demands are specially heavy. The usual weekly dance was held on Friday, the music being supplied by a number of women volunteers, in generous response to a recent appeal for players. Mr. Peter Rowell and his company staged, an enjoyable concert yesterday, which was well applauded, those participating being Miss Esme Crow, Messrs. Eric Foley and Eric Allen, and Master Dudley Bustin. Tap dances were given by Mesdames N. Horsley and D. Bissitt, and several items were contributed by other members of the company. Supper was served in the lounge by the women’s auxiliary on both occasions. ***** More than 400 servicemen visited the Catholic Services Club at. the weekend. Dancing was particularly popular, the music being played on Friday by Mrs. McEwen and Miss P. Kelly, and by Mrs. Ryan on Sunday. Misses C. Redwood and P. Kelly acted as hostesses, and the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association was responsible for the catering supplies. Mrs. Lane’s camp concert party presented an excellent programme yesterday. ami Sunday nights, when a “Polish weekend” will be featured.* * * ♦ ♦ The soldiers’ Sunday tea at the I Y.M.C.A. had Mr. Menzies, Australian Trade Commissioner, as a special guest. Mr. Menzies spoke of the wonderful work being done for soldiers both .here and overseas, and specially mentioned the teas provided each Sunday by volunteer women helpers. Mr. and Mrs. Holdaway, of Nelson, were also present, and Mr. 11. H. Nimmo was in . the chair. Following the tea, which was supervized by women of the 1 Hataitai, Maranui, Worser Bay, and Miramar Methodist Churches, led by Mrs. Walker, the men were entertained with a concert programme. Songs were sung by Mrs. Glover, and Mr. F. Bryant, a violin solo was given by Mrs. G. Holloway and Mr. Khull gave elocutionary items. Miss Finlay and Mr. Holloway were the accompanists. Community singing, ‘ led by Mr. S. Allright with Mr. Wood at the piano, was also popular. ... * * ♦ • A scribbled message on the back of a meal-slip, expressing one guest’s appreciation of the service supplied, was left at the National Club yesterday, bearing the following legend : “A National Club meal is a joy to a hungry airman. Long live the cook!” A record quantity of foodstuffs was consumed on Sunday, and the Wellington South electorate helpers, convened by Mrs. J. H. Mcllroy, who were on duty, were kept busy dispensing hot meals and teas. Misses Shirley Spears and Elza Martin were hostesses for the tea dance which was held between half past five and eight on Saturday. * * * * A programme which included dancing, games, and a concert by Mr. Frank Rodgers and his party was given at the Y.W.C.A. Canon N. F. E. Robertshawe conducted the Sunday service. Miss A D. Rennie, supported by her usual team of helpers worked hard in the kitchen, and others who gave assistance comprised members of the Wellington Croquet Association, the Y.W.C.A. house committee, t the Y.W.C.A. baseball team. Women of the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church provided the Saturday supper, and the regular donation of fresh vegetables was received from the W.W.S.A. Russell Terrace land girls. ***** The lounge of the Public Service Women’s Club with its attractive tonings of beige, rust, and pale green, was decorated with bowls of flowering currant, and kowhai for* the weekly dance on Friday night and proved a popular addition to the dance floor. Home-made cakes and sandwiches were served at suppertime. The hostesses, Mrs. Berry, Misses 11. Black, J. Murphy and D. Roberts, were assisted by helpers . from the Post and Telegraph Department. Items were given by three uniformed guests, Private Lourie, and two “Buller boys” of the R.N.Z.A.F., dance extras being played by two ■■ club members, Misses O. Moreton and M. Dickey. *
