Hostel And Service Club Hospitality For Forces f’ Servicemen who spent their weekend leave in Wellington were well accommodated. All the service clubs provided welcome relaxation, concerts and dances being popular entertainment mediums. Men visiting the new Combined Services Hostel in Dixon Street for the first time were warmly appreciative of the many comforts at their disposal, and approved the coupon system which has been adopted. It is estimated that more than 250 made use of the sleeping facilities provided at both the Dixon Street and Sydney Street hostels, and the help given by the W.W.S.A. in sending voluntary aides to make the beds was of considerable assistance to the f male staff al Dixon Street,. which is, as yet, working with a minimum of members. The A.N.A. Club’s dances were very well attended throughout the week, the ballroom being crowded to capacity on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Musical items were played on guitars by Electrician Smale, Newton Diffenworth, and Private Bo Kahu. Private James Chambers sang popular vocal solos. With the increased numbers of men availing themselves of the meals served it is apparent that the supply of club cutlery is inadequate. Knives are particularly required, and the cafeteria committee would be very grateful to any citizen or group of citizens who would forward some to the club, 33 Willis Street. Sincere thanks are extended to “Mother of Two Soldiers,” Manawatu, and Mrs. Pycroft, Willis Street, for gifts of iron boilers. Welcome gifts of provisions have been received from country organizations: The Otaki and Te Horo Women’s Emergency Committee, per Miss M. ; Clarke and Mrs. H. B. Blackburn, which forwarded a monthly hamper of cakes; the Masterton Women’s Welfare League, per Mrs. A. Carruthers, a hamper of provisions; the Mauriceville and Ihuranu branch, W.D.F.U., per Miss Edna Dagg, 3 cases of assorted provisions and vegetables; the Hawera W.W.S.A., per Mrs. C. H. Stevens, 2 cases of eggs and 2 sacks of vegetables; and the Victoria College Students’ Association, which sent a donation of cakes. Crowds of servicemen danced to the music of the Rhythm Trio at the Victory Club. Sergeant Glen Prestige and Mr. R. Morton were M.C.’s, and Mrs. Anderson, Miss N. Sparkes, and Miss V. Sparkes were the official hostesses. Thanks are extended to Mrs. Simpson, Misses Jean and Mavis Rae, Jean Day and Nancy Gibson for assistance. The extras were played’by Misses Marjorie Pegram and Rose Mennell, Wanganui. The temporary home of Webby’s Club, in Miss Kathleen O’Connor’s studio, was filled with enthusiastic dancers, all eager to make new friends, and renew oldacquaintances. Douglas Roche and his

band, supplemented by visiting musicians, played the music, and novelty items were featured. Yesterday the club hostesses on duty prepared' tea, after which dancing was continued to music supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Pember. The activities of Webby’s Club will be. carried on through the courtesy of Miss Kathleen O'Connor, at her studio of dancing, directly opposite the club. Rival teams from two ships competed ' in a seamen’s football match last week, sponsored by the British Sailors’ Society, i They were entertained at the society’s 1 clubrooms after the game and given hot ’ tea and a film screening. A party of I seamen was taken on a tramping trip on i Saturday, and after viewing Wellington ! from the lookout on Mt. Victoria returned ; in time for a tea of scrambled eggs and • apples and cream. Mr. W. Thomas acted as M.C. at the social which followed, and ! visiting’ seamen gave Fijian and Hawaiian ' songs and dances. Mr. W. F. bers of the Canteen Group and the Education Department, as well as regular helpers, were in attendance at the. weekend. _ A supper, donated by the Wesley Fireside Group, was served yesterday and a concert was staged by the Elizabeth McCombs drama circle. A minister from the Y .M.C.A. hut at an Air Force station conducted the service. The’ association is grateful for the supply of vegetables received from the W.W.S.A.
