Wellington Service Clubs Crowded Out This weekend saw every service club in Wellington crowded to the doors with servicemen and visitors, and in many cases those in charge had to work at high speed to cope with the problem of feeding the influx of men, to find seating accommodation for them and cloakroom space for the hundreds of coats left there. The A.N.A. club had its Saturday dance in the Town Hall. | The brilliant decorations from the Plunket Ball the previous night were left in position through the gracious gesture of Mrs. H. Jowett, president ■of the ' Plunket Society. Two visitors contributed vocal items, Pharmaceutist mate, third class, John Cahill, and Seaman, first class, Roy Jacobsen. * Miss Molly Price, at the microphone, announced the dances. Supper was served from tables under the gallery and members of the Jewish Women’s Club assisted A.N.A. helpers to attend to the guests. The clubrooms in Willis Street were open as usual and large numbers of visitors visited them to rest and relax, supper being served. The'cafeteria reports a busy time during the week. Gifts were received from the following:Manakau Women's Patriotic Society, per Mrs. Marshall Mills, hamper of cakes; Manakau Younger Set, per Miss Bridie Corbett, a case of cream dainties; Women’s National Welfare League, Masterton, per Mrs. J. B. Carruthers, jams and pickles; two lambs, Mr. D. N. Lane, Hastings; carton of ham, T. H. Walker and Sons, Hawera; vegetables, Mr. Percy Howell, Paraparaumu, and Mrs. H. M. Wilson, Hastings, provisions, Air Force Relations, Hastings, per Miss M. Davies. Mr. L. Wood led community singing last night, with Miss Lillian Chalker at the piano. Mr. Wood also provided a concert party, members of which included Mrs. Wilfrid Andrews and Mr. R. Maddams.

VVAAJLXO. A hot meal was served at the Cinderella Club yesterday and music for dancing was provided by Mrs. Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Koskello. A soldier gave a tapdance on Friday night. Those on duty in the weekend were Misses E. Rowland, P. Cross, M. Walsh, N. Richards, R. Thomas, B. Adamson. The club wishes once again to thank the W.W.S.A. girls from the Aitken Street gardens for donations of fresh vegetables. Mrs. J. S. Martin, president of the Y.W.C.A., was the weekend hostess for the association’s entertainments. ' Members of the Young Pretenders’ Drama Club, with Mrs. A. D. Priestley as producer, provided yesterday’s concert, and Mr. Hendray of the Y.M.C.A., conducted a service. Saturday's cafeteria duty was taken by . girls of . the G.P.0., with Mrs. Mclnnes, and yesterday by Marsden School old girls, with the. Misses Page as conveners. The Hataitai E.P.S. group provided and served Saturday’s supper. Coats and door duties were taken by Mr. and Mrs. Robson, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Martin, Mr. Thompson, Mr. Cone, Mrs. Nisbet, Miss Withers, and members of the Progressive Women’s Club. Gifts of vegetables were much appreciated from the Paraparaumu and Russell Terrace land groups, W.W.S.A. Many visiting servicemen have found the National Club “a home away from home,” where they can rest, relax and enjoy home cooked meals. Mrs. D. J. Fyfe, the new convener for Wellington West workers; was in charge yesterday with her group, and on Saturday Mrs. Rodger Roberts and Miss Josephine Russell were in charge of the tea dance. A gift of lamb was welcomed. \ ■ The Spinsters’ Club held a special dance on Saturday, which was very well attended. The girls had provided a delicious savoury supper that appealed to. the many dancers. Music was provided both on' Saturday and yesterday by an orchestra. The dances on Tuesday and Friday were also popular with servicemen and visitors. Lovely bowls of spring flowers decorated the ballroom at the weekend. Girls of the Marton Maori Girls’ College, who have knitted and sent socks to the British Sailors’ Society,'are warmly thanked. An outing to Maidstone Park, followed by a hot savoury: tea at the rooms, was enjoyed by the men. At night the Tory Street Hall young people were in charge of the concert,' with Mr. B. Stevens as master of ceremonies. They

provided last night’s hot tea and the concert that followed. Mr. M. Garratt was the speaker. On Wednesday pupils of Mr. F. S. Jackson gave a concert, and Mrs. I. Halligan’s pupils presented a one-act play. Miss P. Trimmer gave dance items. , Mr. and Mrs. B. Levy gave a gift tea at the Y.M.C.A. last night. Mr. Ray Smith was chairman; and was accompanied by Mrs. Smith. Items were songs, Miss Ena Rapley, Mr. W. Marshall, Mr. A. Gardiner; vocal duet, Mr. and Mrs. B. Gardiner; elocutionary items, Mrs. Wiggs. The ; accompanists were: Mrs. A Ginn, Mr. B. Gardiner, and Miss Finlay. Mr. Allwright led ‘ community singing, with Mr. Wood at the piano.
