WELLINGTON RUGBY

Petone Still On Top ARMY IN SECOND PLACE By beating Hutt by six points to nil in a hard-fought 'game at the Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday, Petone remained unbeaten in the Wellington Rugby Union’s Jubilee Cup competition, and are now leading for the senior championship, with eight points, one point ahead of the Army fifteen. The game between Petone and Hutt was also for the Mcßain Shield. . Army, showing improved form in all departments, outplayed Poneke-Oriental at Athletic Park by five points. With a helpful northerly breeze behind them, it is hard to understand why the Army team elected to make play close. These tactics did not pay them, as all they could do was to score two penalty goals. They did much better in the second spell, when they gave their backs a run, and some clever scissors passing resulted in tries between the posts by Donovan and Geary, both of which were converted by Donovan. It was a battle between the PonekeOriental forwards, who played with dash throughout, and the speedy Army rearguard. The combined team put up a spirited fight, Hayes playing an out--standing game at five-eigths. With their forwards going well, and Taylor kicking well, Wellington showed improved form to beat Wellington College Old Boys by seven points at Kilbirnie Park. Beard, at centre-threequarter, scored all Old Boys’ points, notching a try and kicking two penalty goals. Some close tussles were seen, Marist Brothers’ Old Boys just getting home front University by a field goal to a try at Kelburn Park, and Athletic just managing to beat Eastbourne by one point at Eastbourne. • , • The early game at Athletic Park between A.A. Battery and Seatoun had to be cancelled because the A.A. Battery team was unable to play. Onslow also was unable to keep its engagement with Johnsonville at Nairnville Park. Everything was ready, ex cept the ball, for the game between Wellington Regiment and A.N.A. Headquarters at Johnsonville, and a delay of 40 minutes occurred before a ball could be procured.
