AT THE SERVICE CLUBS

Plenty Of Hospitality For Men Of Forces A.N.A; Club cafeteria helpers have been working at high pressure, catering for the numerous visitor-guests who thronged the premises during the week and at the weekend. Muchneeded gif ts of provisions were received from country and town friends. The committee tenders thanks to the donors of a magnificent hamper con tabling meat, cheese, hams, pickles, jams, sauces and cakes, and four Sacks of vegetables received from the Dalefield residents through the Martinborough mayoress’s committee, per Miss Joyce Grant, also for hampers of cakes from the Manakau Women’s Patriotic Society, per Mrs. Marshall Miles; and the Manakau Younger Set, per Miss Bridie Corbett; fruit and vegetables from Mrs. H. M. Wilson, Hastings, and two sacks of potatoes from Mrs. L. S. Groome, Waipukurau. Other donations, including a cooked ham, vegetables and provisions, came from Mrs. Alf Walker, Hawera; Air Force Relations, Hastings, per Miss M. Davies; Mrs. J. Kent, Reikorangi; Mrs. C. E. Wootton, Waikanae, the Hutt Valley and Paraparaumu gardening sections of the W.W.S.A., Mrs. L. Pickard, and Miss M. Loughnan. Two particularly valuable contributions, a bag of sugar and a dozen china, cups, were received from persons who preferred to remain anonymous. ♦ A special dance was held on Thursday night, when national songs of the Allied countries were sung during the dancing. * * * Picnic Tea. Men who visited the British Sailors' Society’s rooms on Saturday afternoon enjoyed an excursion to Titahi Bay, where they were taken by club helpers, and treated to a “billy tea” on the way. They returned in time for a social evening. Solo artists were Miss T. Dear and Miss Mary McCallam. A large number of men also took advantage during the week of the recreational facilities provided for them. Sunday tea was followed by a short service and sacred concert, the guest speaker being Mr. C. Wilcox. Music for both concert and service Was provided by Mr. 11. Barrem, Mr. D. Martin and Miss Ruth Martin. The so ciety wishes to thank members of the Kdpuaranga Women’s Institute for the well-stocked hamper of assorted cakes which they forwarded. ♦ * * ♦ Army and Air Force Apple-Eaters. The Children of Mary Sodalities of Wellington, under the direction of Miss M. Peebles, were on duty as Catholic .Service. Club hostesses. It was “apple time” for their guests throughout the weekend because of the

donation of . four cases of Jonathans by Mr. Vickers. Dancing and games were featured each evening, and catering arrangements were supplemented by a hamper from Otaki and a donation from the central council of the C.O.M. Tasty meals were served and a party. tea heralded a special evening yesterday. Lance-Corporal Nelson and Private Rowe gave items. Those who helped recently to decorate the rooms in the Sodality colours of blue and white were Misses V. Purcell, E. Runt, V. King, J. Whittle, K. Noromey, I. Payne, I. Moloney, and E. and R. Simpson. *** * . Lower Hutt Hostesses. The Y.M.C.A.’s Sunday tea was hostessed by members of the Waterloo branch of the Y.M.C.A. ladies' auxiliary, under the presidency of Mrs. J. W. Andrews. Mr. W. Carey was chairman and he was accompanied by Mrs. Carey. Special guests were Mrs. Croom, Mr. C. S. Falconer, and Mr. L. Cato. A concert which won much applause was given by Misses Olga Burton and Janet Reynolds (songs), Miss Ruth Reid (violin solo), Miss Monica Bell (elocutionary items). Miss Nora Gray accompanied at the piano, and Mr. H. Hindle was the community song leader (with Mr. W. Mann at the piano). ♦ ♦ ♦ w,' r J ■ , ‘ ~ Many Y.W.C.A. Helpers. Mrs. W. Tailby was the hostess at the Y.W.C.A. The cafeteria was staffed by Mrs. Butler and Misses B. and K. Page, assisted by the Wellington Canteen Group, members of the Y.W.C.A. Bridge Club, and girls from the Census and Statistics Department. Supper was provided ’by the Miramar Anglican Ladies’ Guild on Saturday.

The Rev. J. Churchill took the ser vice yesterday, and an entertainment followed, featuring Mr. and Mrs. R Cousins, the Misses Cousins, Mesdames Newman, Chambers, and Black-well-Smith, and Messrs. Woolcott and Fitzwilliams. Vegetable supplies were received from W.W.S.A. land groups at Russell Terrace, Khandallah and Karori.

Toe II Concert. Another concert was staged for the benefit of a large audience of servicemen at the Toe H premises on Sunday night, by Peter Rowell’s party. Those who gave v ical and instrumental assistance included Misses Ngaire Keyes. Valma Keyes, and Zena Goldston, Messrs. Draper, Sellers, Foley, Rowell and R. and S. Campbell, Donations of foodstuffs would considerably assist this club’s pantry resources. Breakfasts, dinners, teas and suppers are provided each week for men in uniform and gifts of jam, pickles, or preserves sent, or left at the Toe H. 216 Lambton Quay, would therefore be doubly welcome.

Active National Club Assistants. Many soldiers attend the mid-day dinners provided at the National Club, and considerable assistance was given by Miss A. Martin, who helped dispense the meals last week. Those who helped on Friday were Mrs. O. Robertson. Misses Pat Hogg, Margaret Cooper, Shirley Spears, and R. Heinemann. Saturday’s weekly tea dance was convened by Misses B. McLaren and P. Hogg, Miss I. Mason supervising the kitchen. Yesterday members of the National Party’s Wellington East electorate took over, Mrs. 11. E. Avery was in charge and Mrs. A. E. Morley headed the kitchen helpers.
