it is despised and held up to ridicule.

Man appears upon this scene, works out his allotted span and passes on, but the word of God endures eternally unchangeable.

During the last generation, the genius of man has made almost unbelievable progress in producing those things which make for the advancement and comfort of mankind generally, but such is the inherent wickedness of the human heart, that, in our day, we see all the genius, all the inventions that a beneficient God has made available for the good and uplifting of the human race, wholly directed 1 to the work of destruction and death. Surely this is striking

testimony to the utter inability of man to direct the affairs of the world apart from the guidance of the God who created this earth for the use of man. The Great World War was a war to end war, but God was left out of the post-war construction and the world is now engaged in a more desperate war than ever, and in spite of all the talk—undoubtedly sincere though it may be—that we hear again concerning post-war construction, unless there is a turning to God, a recognition of His Sovereign rule in the affairs of men and a bowing to His word, then no lasting good will come, but only the fevered preparations for a more cruel. and . bloody war than the present one. ' Turning to God in the hours of extremity ' is worthless unless there is a holding on to God after deliverance out of the extremity. He is ever ready to hear the cry for help from a true heart nad to answer speedily. But He does not stay were He is not welcome.

Have we become so enslaved to our own passions and wills that we are powerless to break loose and turn to God? If so, then surely there is terrible retribution coming upon us, unless we cease from our own doings and just take the deliverance God is offering us in His Son, for “He was delivered up for our own offences and raised again for our justification” and “neither is there salvation in any other.”
