Lieutenant W. R. C. Whyte

The promotion, after nearly 30 years’ service as a-member of the New Zealand Permanent Staff, to» Lieutenant and quartermaster, of W.0.l W. R. C. Whyte, regimental sergeant-major of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, has been gazetted. Lieutenant Whyte has been appointed officer instructor at the District School of Instruction, Burnham. Before joining the permanent staff at Invercargill in 1912, Lieutenant Whyte belonged to the Otago Mounted Rifles from 1900, and during that time he had the honour to sound the Royai Salute to King George V and Queen Mary when they toured New Zealand as the Duke and Duchess of York. At the outbreak of the Great Wai Lieutenant Wbyt/” served as a mount ed rifles instructor in. Expeditionary Force training camps, and in 1919 he rejoined his unit in. the Southland area. In 1921 he was appointed regi mental sergeant-major of the Otago Mounted Rifles, with the rank of W.0.1, and transferred to head quarters- in Dunedin, where he re mained till 1937 when he came to Christchurch as regimental sergeant major of the Canterbury YeomanryCavalry, in those days «a much large; unit than it is now. Lieutenant Whyte has been award ed the 16 Years’ Service Medal, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
